University staff reject pay offer
Unison union members in higher education have rejected a 1 percent pay offer by a two to one margin.
The union’s higher education committee said that if final talks don’t produce an improved offer the union will ballot its 35,000 members for strikes.
Bristol protest to oppose EDL racists
Anti-fascists are set to stand up to a planned protest by the racist English Defence League (EDL) in Bristol this Saturday.
Support for the counter-demonstration has grown in recent weeks after South West TUC and Bristol NUT have stated that they will be mobilising.
LGBT activists have also pledged to bring marchers to oppose the EDL from Bristol Pride, which is being held on the same day.
A “We Are Bristol” protest has been called for Saturday 14 July. It will assemble at 11am, at Fountains, Bristol City Centre.
End to Bradford hole occupation
Bradford’s “Occupy Wastefield” protest came to an end on Tuesday of last week following a court possession order.
Protesters had been occupying the “hole where Bradford’s heart should be”—a site granted to the Westfield corporation seven years ago for a shopping centre it still hasn’t built.
Marches in Sheffield and Oxford
Trade unionists are set to march against the cuts in the constituencies of David Cameron and Nick Clegg on Saturday of this week.
The demonstrations are supported by the local Trades Councils, and the local and national NUT and NASUWT teaching unions.
In Sheffield, the protest will assemble at 11.30am, at Devonshire Green, S1, and march to City Hall. In Oxford, it will assemble 11am, at Manzil Way, OX4. A rally will take place from 1pm at Broad Street, OX1.
Missile campaign loses court battle
Council tenants have lost a court case against the Ministry of Defence to stop surface-to-air missiles being placed on their roof during the Olympic Games.
They are residents of Fred Wigg Tower in Leytonstone, east London—one of six sites where the ministry confirmed last week that it intends to place missiles.
