Sean Rigg inquest recalls officers

Issue No. 2313

The inquest into the death of Sean Rigg has recalled four police officers after new evidence came to light.

The four arrested Sean in Brixton in August 2008 while he was suffering from severe mental distress due to schizophrenia. He died that night.

The jury and the Rigg family only learned of a meeting involving the IPCC watchdog, Police Federation and Department of Professional Standards after one of the four mentioned it.

A memo produced by the IPCC following the meeting had not been disclosed. Leslie Thomas QC accused PC Andrew Birks of a “gross dereliction of duty”.

The inquest at Southwark Crown Court was expected to end this week.
