The US Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s recent international tour has revealed the vicious politics peddled by the US ruling class. Romney is super-privileged and ultra-rich—and he is not good at hiding that fact.
Speaking off the cuff, he forgets to conceal the most obviously brutal ideas that other politicians cover up. This is the man who said, “I’m not concerned about the very poor.”
In a visit to Israel this week Romney spouted sheer racism. He said Israel’s economic success compared to the Palestinians was due to “cultural” differences and the “hand of providence”.
He added that Israel’s GDP per head is “about $21,000” and that people should compare that with “the areas managed by the Palestinian Authority, which is more like $10,000”.
Romney utterly erases the hundreds of billions of US economic and military aid to Israel, the murderous siege of Gaza and 70 years of occupation.
Even his figures are wrong. Actually Israel’s GDP per head is $31,000 and that in Palestinian Authority areas is just $1,500.
It may come as no surprise that when Romney passed through Britain last week he met Tony Blair, George Osborne and David Cameron.
But how disgraceful that Ed Miliband “shared ideas and perspectives” with one of the most disgusting figures in politics.
