Cleaners and transport workers strike back against attacks

Issue No. 2315

Tyne and Wear Metro cleaners staged another successful and well supported strike on Monday of this week. The strike was part of their ongoing fight for decent pay and against the victimisation of one of their colleagues.

A mass protest was held outside the Haymarket Metro on Monday morning where cleaners and supporters leafleted the public about the dispute.

RMT officer Micky Thompson told Socialist Worker, “The management have got their heads in the sand hoping we’ll go away. But we won’t—not until we have won improvements in pay and condtions and our member his job back.”

Tube cleaners set to strike

Cleaners on London Underground were set to strike for 48 hours from Thursday of this week over pay and an Olympic bonus.

The RMT members are demanding a true London Living Wage after bosses refused to keep pay in line with inflation—essentially meaning a pay cut. They won the living wage after strikes in 2007. But workers still have to pay to get to stations they are set to clean during shifts.

However, workers are determined to win the dispute despite victimisation from management. RMT union rep Clara Osagiede told Socialist Worker, “People are very angry. Our demands are legitimate and we’re willing to go on until management see sense.”

Caledonian MacBrayne ferries

Workers on Caledonian MacBrayne ferries are being balloted for action. The company has refused to give assurances to staff over job security, pensions and union organisation. It is in the process of taking over five routes from Transport Scotland as part of its move to privatise the service.

Heathrow Express

The RMT is balloting workers on Heathrow Express trains after the company offered staff a pay rise of just 1.75 percent.
