Riot From Wrong film points finger at uprising's real causes

Issue No. 2317

Riot From Wrong is what the BBC’s The Riots In Their Own Words programme should have been. This new film documentary by Fully Focused Productions pulls no punches.

Police sergeants, lawyers, MPs and rioters are spoken to and given a voice. But the voices from the establishment don’t prevent the programme from pointing the finger at the right issues.

The film starts at the death of Mark Duggan, with footage of the scene just after he had been shot. It speaks to relatives and friends—and slams the police and the IPCC for how Mark’s family were treated.

The film also lays into the media for its character assassination of Mark Duggan in the hours after his death.

It goes on to look at the events outside Tottenham police station. It shows how the police’s contempt for locals ignited fires across the country, and follows the riots to Birmingham, Manchester and Liverpool.

Once the narrative is set down, the film looks at issues ignored by the majority of the media. Police harassment and stop-and-search are constant themes. But it also looks further than just the anti-police motives.

Youth unemployment, tuition fees and cuts to EMA and benefits are juxtaposed with the bailout of the banks and MPs’ expenses. The riots are compared to global anti-austerity protests. Perhaps without realising it, the film ends up making the argument that the system needs radical change.
