University lecturers set to debate action to defend pensions

Delegates from older universities were set to meet on Thursday of this week to discuss the next steps in their pensions dispute.

At the annual conference in June we decided to restart our industrial action with a work to contract over the summer. Plans to escalate the action are tabled at Thursday’s conference.

The choice is presented as one between an all-out indefinite strike by the end of October or suspending action and going cap in hand to the employers.

Activists are arguing for an alternative approach. We want to coordinate action with other unions that may take action in October. This could close universities and get our action off to a flying start.

UCU election: vote for Mandy Brown

Lecturers in the UCU union are voting to elect a further education member to their union’s national executive committee.

Socialist Worker is supporting UCU Left’s Mandy Brown from Lambeth College in south London. Mandy will campaign for a democratic, fighting union. Voting ends on 27 September.

Meanwhile UCU members at Lambeth College were set to strike for two hours on Wednesday of next week. They are fighting punitive lesson observations. For more on Mandy’s campaign go to mandy4nec.wordpress.com
