Bolton demo cops in court

Issue No. 2320

Two police officers have been charged with perverting the course of justice for their actions on an anti-racist demonstration in Bolton in March 2010.

Inspector Robert Cantrell and PC Alan Glover appeared at York Magistrates Court on Tuesday of this week. The case relates to the arrest of anti-fascist protester Alan Clough.

Alan was charged with a public order offence following a protest against the English Defence League. The two officers were charged after video footage emerged that contradicted their evidence.

It showed Alan being struck in the face. The Crown Prosecution Service decided not to go ahead with the case against him.

The Justice4Bolton campaign was set up to defend those arrested on the demonstration.

Mark Krantz from the campaign said, “The charges against these officers validate our calls for a people’s inquiry into what happened on the day. It raises wider issues about how we are policed when we protest.”
