Ian Tomlinson cop sacked

Issue No. 2321

Simon Harwood, the cop who struck Ian Tomlinson, has been found guilty of gross misconduct and dismissed from the Metropolitan Police.

PC Harwood admitted that his actions brought the Met into disrepute at a disciplinary hearing on Monday of this week. Ian collapsed and died minutes after Harwood shoved and hit him during G20 protests in London in April 2009.

The panel decided against hearing any evidence that would establish whether Harwood contributed to or caused Ian’s death. Ian’s family walked out of the court, branding proceedings a “whitewash”.

Paul King, Ian’s son, said, “We came here expecting a disciplinary hearing. There has been no hearing. The Met has basically gone ‘no comment’. We will now be looking to the civil courts for the final judgement on who killed our dad.”

Harwood has been suspended on full pay since he was identified as the officer that struck Ian Tomlinson. He will still get his full pension.
