The world’s liberal press has gone into overdrive attacking Muslims for protesting against an anti-Islam film.
They claim it’s just the latest example of Muslims putting religion above their own sacred totem of “free speech”.
But this is not an issue of “intolerant” Muslims. The video is nothing but a piece of crude racism. Like fundamentalist preachers and soldiers desecrating Korans, it was specifically designed to antagonise believers in Islam.
If filthy racist videos about black people were being posted all over YouTube then there would rightly be widespread outrage.
But there is something more at play here—Islamophobia and the role of US imperialism. And there are double standards.
Earlier this year the US government asked YouTube to take down so-called “Muslim extremist” videos. The firm rushed to comply. But when it comes to the anti-Islam video the Google-owned website hosts it everywhere it can.
The protesters against the video are not simply motivated by religious offence but by anger at US imperialism in general.
They want to get back at the West, whether it’s for the chaos the US has caused in Libya or drone strikes in Yemen. It is no coincidence that US embassies have borne the brunt of their rage.
