Protest to save transport museum

Around 20 workers and TSSA union activists gathered outside the London Transport Museum on Wednesday of last week, protesting against plans to cut the museum’s grant by 25 percent.

Seven posts are already threatened. The entrance fee for the museum has seen a hike this year. Community outreach and educational programmes are being shelved.


Anger at fire station downgrade

Campaigners are to hold a demonstration and rally over the downgrading of Ridge fire station in Hastings. The fire station is under threat of losing nine firefighter posts, which will hit local fire cover.

Wildcat strike halts French ferries fleet

Management at Brittany Ferries have “tied up” the fleet in response to wild-cat strikes by workers in France defending their terms and conditions.

This has stopped all the fleets sailings, affecting Plymouth and Portsmouth.


United Left holds debates in Durham

Over 50 members of the Unite union attended a meeting of the union’s United Left group in Durham on Sunday of last week.

They agreed to support the Crossrail dispute, and debated Scottish independence.

They also agreed to support Unite members who are also councillors when they vote against the cuts.


Revolution is very much on the agenda

Around 125 people attended the Marxism and revolution weekend school hosted by International Socialism Journal last weekend.

And the Socialist Worker appeal was launched on the Saturday evening with Yuri Prasad speaking on soul and the Civil Rights movement.


Left lecturers look to future

Some 110 delegates attended the Defending post-16 Education conference last Saturday.

Jeremy Corbyn MP reported on the latest developments at London Met University and the wider context of the fight against austerity. This was followed by a Greek lecturer from Athens University.
