Gas firms cash in on the cold
Energy firms are hiking up their prices just as the weather gets colder—again. Companies including British Gas, Npower, and Scottish Power are raising prices by up to 9 percent.
British Gas makes more than £500 million in profit annually. Its owner, Centrica, rakes in £1.9 million in profit every day.
Cash for Virgin from subsidies
Train operating firms made a £2.7 billion net gain from government subsidies last year. The firms paid £1.17 billion to run services but grabbed £3.88 billion public subsidies in return. The new figures show that Virgin made a £133 million net gain.
Rebekah Brooks’ mega payoff
Rebekah Brooks, former News International boss and close chum of David Cameron, received a £7 million pay-off, it has emerged.
She faces charges of evidence tampering and phone hacking. Her pay-off included keeping the use of a chauffeur-driven car.
Marines held for murder
Five Royal Marines are being held in custody accused of murder in Afghanistan. Police found a video on a marine’s laptop that appears to show marines discussing whether to give aid to a wounded Afghan.
