Around 100 Travellers and their supporters marched on the Department for Communities and Local Government in central London today (Friday) to mark the anniversary of the Traveller evictions at Dale Farm in Essex.
The protest was called by the Traveller Solidarity Network and aimed to “serve an eviction notice” on Eric Pickles, the Tory minister who plans to make it even harder for Travellers to find sites to live on.
After scuffles with police a few protesters clambered onto the department’s roof to hang banners in support of Travellers and their rights.
Some of the evicted families have found temporary homes at the nearby Oak Lane site, which is also threatened with eviction. Others have moved 70 miles away to Cambridgeshire.
