Essex fire dispute ends in deal

Issue No. 2327

A four-year dispute in Essex fire service has ended in a negotiated agreement. The firefighters in the FBU union were fighting job cuts.

They held a series of strikes, including a 24-hour strike and 1,000-strong march in July. Strikes were called off during the Olympics. Further strikes were called off for talks.

The deal includes new terms in return for an assurance that the number of full-time firefighters will stay the same until 2015.

But this only stands if there are no further cuts to government funding. Union members voted two to one to accept the settlement.

The FBU has called a march against cuts in Leeds. Assemble Saturday 3 November, 12.30pm, outside the Art Gallery, Headrow, Leeds. It has also called a lobby of parliament on Wednesday of next week
