Students get set to march

Issue No. 2327

Students across Britain are gearing up for the National Union of Students protest against government attacks on education.

The demonstration, on 21 November in central London, is expected to put thousands on the streets.

Tom Maguire at Sheffield University is on the local publicity committee for the protest. He told Socialist Worker, “We’ve been having mobilising meetings of 60 to 80 people, sometimes over 100.”

Tom said the student union has made building for the demonstration a priority. He added, “We’re not just asking for a reverse in the fees rise, we’re demanding free education for all and an end to marketisation in universities.”

Tom and his fellow students are going all out to bring as many people as possible to the demonstration.

“We’ve been making banners, designing leaflets and having days of action,” he said. “Sheffield had one of the biggest delegations from outside London last year—we want to make it even bigger this year.”
