Health workers call march against south west pay cartel

Issue No. 2328

The Unite union’s health branch in Bristol has called a demonstration on 1 December against moves to slash pay across the south west of England.

Bosses at 20 trusts in the area have formed a “cartel” to enforce the attacks on pay. After packed joint union meetings and local protests union activists have called for a regional demonstration and a ballot for strikes.

Regional officials say that a regional demonstration will take place in March 2013. But no strike dates have yet been called.

Bristol health workers are calling on colleagues from across the region to join them. Trust bosses are in talks with other trusts that may roll out similar attacks elsewhere.

Meanwhile national staff council of officials in all NHS unions was set to meet on Friday of this week. It was expected to agree to major changes to the Agenda for Change national agreement that will slash pay, terms and conditions.

The Unite union health executive has opposed the attacks but has not yet called strikes.

Health worker activists have produced a model motion to pass urgently in union branch and workplace meetings to put pressure on union leaders to reject the attack. Download the motion at

Demonstrations against cuts

A demonstration has been called in Manchester for 8 December against attacks on NHS services across the region. Up to seven A&Es are threatened with closure, which could lead to the closure of whole hospitals.

Ambulance services face privatisation. And job cuts in mental health threaten a 20 percent increase in workload.

Expensive consultation

NHS bosses in north west London spent an astonishing £7 million a “consultation” into proposed A&E closures. Local campaigners have denounced it as “a shambles”.

The consultation offered the public no option to oppose all four of the proposed A&E closures. Some 6,000 marched against cuts in the area in September.

Lewisham A&E under threat

A public meeting opposing service cuts at Lewisham hospital was set to take place this Thursday.

Health workers and supporters are organising against proposed threats to services as South London NHS Trust has gone into administration.

The hospital could lose its A&E. A demonstration has been called on 24 November.
