Anti-fascists oppose 'North West Infidels' in Liverpool

Issue No. 2328

Around 80 anti-fascist protesters outnumbered 20 of the fascist North West Infidels (NWI) at short notice in Liverpool last Saturday.

The fascists called a “national demonstration against the IRA” in Liverpool. In reality this was part of an ongoing attempt to stoke-up anti-Irish bigotry and sectarianism in the city.

Fascists previously attacked a Liverpool Irish march in February and subsequent marches, including a commemoration of volunteers in the International Brigades.

Previously fascists have attacked Occupy Liverpool, the radical bookshop and women's co-op News From Nowhere. They have attempted to intimidate trade unionists, including striking public sector workers.

The counter protest reflected the diversity of Liverpool and included school students. The fascists’ numbers dwindled quickly as many had travelled from outside the city.

Saturday was an important step forward for anti-fascism in Liverpool. Campaigners now plan to build for the “Griffin Must Go” campaign to kick the Nazi MEP out of his North West seat.
