FE lecturers

by Phil Webster, Blackburn College
Issue No. 1924

MEMBERS OF the Natfhe lecturers’ union at Blackburn College have voted to ballot immediately for strikes against up to 180 redundancies planned over the next few months.

The redundancies will affect teaching and non-teaching staff, and come on top of 60 voluntary redundancies six months ago. Many of those 60 “volunteered” under extreme pressure.

Our union branch meeting has also called for an independent inquiry into college finances, which have plunged into a mess over the last couple of years.

Natfhe members are hoping that non-teaching staff in the Unison union will also vote for action. Incidentally, foreign secretary Jack Straw is a governor of the college!
