Mind the gap—a crack widens on the East Coast Mainline

The RMT rail union has released a shocking picture of a 12 centimetre gap in the track of the East Coast Mainline at Colton Junction, south of York. Normal running speeds are 125 mph in the area. The picture was taken at the beginning of last week.

The original crack was marked for repair. But due to cuts it was not replaced until four days later—by which time the crack had become a gap whilst trains were still running.

A train could have derailed, jumped the tracks and collided with an oncoming service. East Coast Mainline had increased its profits to over £7 million by March.
