Bristol post workers deliver solid strike

A solid strike took place at Mead Street sorting office in Bristol on Monday of this week to defend national agreements and fight unreasonable workloads. Over 100 managers from across the south west were brought in to try and break the strike.

PCS, Unison and NUT union members visited pickets to show solidarity. The workers plan to strike again on Monday of next week—and other offices could join them.

Pret upholds union activist’s sacking

Fast food chain Pret A Manger has upheld its decision to sack a worker who helped organise a union.

Andrej Stopa was dismissed from Pret’s St Pancras branch in September, shortly after the Pret A Manger Staff Union (Pamsu) was set up. Pamsu says it will fight to unionise Pret staff and for the London living wage.

Voting to start in RMT London race

Balloting for the election of London Transport regional organiser is set to begin on 17 December and will end in February next year. Socialist Worker is supporting Unjum Mirza.

GMB’s Paul Kenny plans to step down

GMB union general secretary Paul Kenny has announced he plans to step down from the post next year. He has run the union since 2005 and was re-elected unopposed in 2010. But he will leave in late 2013 instead of serving his full term. This means there will be a fresh election.

Support for Gaza in South Yorkshire

A packed book launch took place in Sheffield on Friday of last week for Musheir El?Farra’s book, When the Sky Rained White Fire. Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign organised the meeting. A fundraising meal for Gaza in Rotherham the following day raised £2,700.

Journalist meeting discusses future

Activists in the National Union of Journalists met on Saturday of last week to discuss the way forward for the left in the union.

On the Leveson Report, the meeting agreed that a conscience clause is no substitute for strong union organisation.
