No verdict in legal aid strike talks

by Sadie Robinson

Lawyers and solicitors in Scotland are continuing action against plans to cut legal aid. The changes would force people with a disposable income of more than £68 a week to contribute towards their legal costs.

It would also change the way that disposable income is defined, among other changes. Representatives for the lawyers met Scottish justice secretary Kenny MacAskill last week.

His offer to increase the threshold to £82 failed to resolve the dispute. Lawyers and solicitors have launched several surprise strikes at courts across Scotland in protest at the cuts.
