Strike ballot closing for 80,000 jobcentre workers

Issue No. 2335

A ballot of 80,000 workers will close this week at the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP).

The PCS union has called the ballot in the face of threatened redundancies as part of the cuts the government is driving through in the civil service.

Workers are furious that their jobs are to go. Many work in job centres and help to administer benefits among other things.

Steve West, who represents workers in the DWP, told Socialist Worker, “The level of unemployment hasn’t gone down, so there is plenty of work for us to do.

“People know that the cuts the government wants to make are much bigger than the ones it has announced. Members are angry and know that we need to fight this now.”

The ballot closes on Thursday of this week. If it is a yes vote the union is expected to call a one day strike on 21 January to kick start the action.
