Civil service workers round up

Issue No. 2338

Department for Transport workers were set to strike on Friday of this week over cuts.

Government plans to shut all DVLA local offices will slash 1,200 jobs.

The 39 offices will be shut in three stages if the plan goes ahead—beginning in October this year.

The PCS union is asking the department not to issue 90-day consultation notices.

If the department goes ahead with the notices, workers will strike for the last three hours of the working day to kick off the action.

A ballot began of 1,000 Department for Education workers on Monday of this week.

The workers say that education minister Michael Gove is making the department an example of the cuts the government can make to all its departments.

Department board members made a game of the cuts before Christmas.

They wore hats and were not allowed to remove them until they said what they were cutting.

Court fines collections workers were set to walk out on Thursday of this week from 2-4pm against the threatened privatisation of the service.
