Lobby over London fire cuts

Issue No. 2339

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has condemned a decision by London mayor Boris Johnson to go ahead with swingeing cuts.

He plans to close 12 fire stations, remove 18 engines and slash 520 firefighter jobs.

The London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority last month rejected the plans on the grounds that they would threaten public safety. But Johnson wants to impose them anyway.

Paul Embery, London FBU regional secretary, described the cuts as “reckless and wrong”.

“It is an outrage that the mayor is going against the democratic decision of his own fire authority and the wishes of most Londoners,” he added.

“The mayor is single-handedly jeopardising the safety of millions of Londoners on the altar of crude economic considerations.

“We now need the widest possible campaign, with local communities working together with the FBU to stop these dangerous cuts.

“That fight begins today.”

The FBU have called a protest at the London Fire Authority meeting on Monday of next week from 1pm.
