No debate for fascists

Issue No. 2340

The Cambridge Union has defended its invitation of French fuhrer Marine Le Pen to a debate.

But you can’t debate with fascists.

Fascism is about the destruction of democracy and working class organisation.

Fascists don’t want to discuss views and then go home. They want to gain respectability so they can grow.

They pursue a political project that in Hitler’s Germany ended with the gas chambers.

Marine Le Pen leads the French Front National party (FN)—one of the most successful fascist parties in Europe. Giving her a platform has consequences.

Fascist organisations historically operate a dual strategy of winning electoral respectability while trying to control the streets.

The British National Party has tried to this in Britain, while the thugs in the English Defence League (EDL) took to the streets.

But they have been beaten back. Unite Against Fascism has been at the centre of organising determined resistance to the EDL.

In public, FN leaders want to keep their distance from the racist thugs who look to them.

But whatever the smooth exterior, free speech for fascist politicians puts the liberty and lives of everyone they target in danger.

This is why Socialist Worker argues for no platform for fascists. They must be confronted wherever they go.
