Support grows for Sussex occupation

by Siân Ruddick
Issue No. 2340

Support continues to grow for students occupying at Sussex university against the privatisation of 235 jobs.

Hundreds of students, lecturers and other trade unionists held a solidarity protest on campus on Tuesday of this week.

And hundreds have added their names to the occupations list of supporters, including author Noam Chomsky.

Security staff have been trying to prevent people from joining the occupation, which began on Thursday last week with around 50 occupiers. But on Tuesday many supporters managed to get into the building and join the occupiers.

The students are holding meetings, talks and events in the occupation and discussing the way forward for the occupation and the movement against privatisation.

If management’s plans go ahead cleaners, security staff and catering workers could all see their jobs outsourced to private companies. At other universities this has led to an assault on terms and conditions and job losses.
