'Bring it on' - Jerry Hicks challenges Len McCluskey

Issue No. 2341

Blacklisted engineering worker Jerry Hicks was set to be confirmed as a candidate in the Unite union’s general secretary election on Friday of this week.

And he’s demanding a chance to debate incumbent Len McCluskey at open hustings.

Some 123 nominations for Jerry had already been confirmed as Socialist Worker went to press.

Jerry is calling for Unite to lead the action against attacks on wages, jobs and public services.

“The real election is now on,” Jerry told Socialist Worker. “I’ll be announced as challenger, and I’ll pick that challenge up.

“I’m going to take the fight for Britain’s biggest union to the members for them to decide.”

Jerry has been invited to speak at Unite branches across Britain.

He is set to address a public meeting in Doncaster on Wednesday of this week, and a conference of rank and file electricians in Glasgow on Saturday.

McCluskey has given no indication that he is willing to debate his opponent.“Unite should organise regional hustings,” said Jerry.

“They should be videoed and available for all members to view.

“If Mr McCluskey’s supporters are so confident in their vision for the union, I say bring it on.”
