Unemployment stats - call full time on the Tories

Issue No. 2342

The Tories have leapt on figures showing that official employment in Britain is at a record high.

They claim this proves that their economic policies are working for ordinary people.

Figures, from the Office for National Statistics, show that those out of work fell by 14,000 between October and December last year.

The number of people in work rose to 29.7 million.

But behind the headline figures around 27 percent of people in work were in part time jobs.

There were 378,000 fewer full time workers between October and December last year than when the recession began in 2008.

The number of part time workers soared by 572,000 during the same period.

A fifth of young people are now unemployed and numbers continue to go up.

The number of women out of work is still rising

Workers’ pay has been hit too. Average earnings are rising at just 1.4 percent—while official inflation is 2.7 percent.

The government has also admitted that some of those forced onto its Work Programme are classed as being in supported training and employment programmes.

Some of these people can be classed as employed.

In reality the Tories have abandoned millions to unemployment and millions more to poverty wages.
