Why we're supporting Jerry Hicks

Issue No. 2343

Brett Davis, Ministry of Defence

We worked hard to get people out for the two big strike days to defend our pensions. Members saw it as the start of a longer campaign.

They thought that Unite meant business.

But there was a lack of follow-up and a lack of decisive leadership.

It’s frustrating for activists with this general secretary. You can’t fault him on his rhetoric, but where’s the delivery? Why aren’t we putting up a fight?

Amanda Logan, London bus driver

I like what Jerry says about elected officials. Sometimes the union is very top down, and it needs more involvement of the members.

Workers here really wanted to go on strike during the Olympics, but the bosses took out an injunction. We need rank and file organisation to have the confidence to put pressure on the officials to say we have to walk out.

Gareth Lane, Unite community

We shouldn’t be giving Labour a blank cheque. Unite should tell them, if they don’t support our policies we’ll withdraw their money.

Jerry’s talking about making the union more democratic, so it will support strikes and actively fight to bring people out. It needs to get organised for a general strike.
