EWS train drivers

Issue No. 1838

OVER 2,500 drivers from English Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) struck on Saturday across Britain, leading to the cancellation of around 200 trains. Drivers, members of the Aslef union, want better pay and pensions plus cuts in hours.

The employer is worried by the action and is talking of alternative pay offers. But Aslef spokesperson Andrew Murray said that a 35-hour week was the 'central issue' in the dispute and that this had not been conceded.

Another strike is planned for this Saturday, although in a brilliant act of solidarity exemptions will be made for any train carrying protesters to and from the anti-war demonstration.
