Sussex into fifth week of occupation

Issue No. 2344

Sussex university students have entered their fifth week of occupation.

Students have staged a sit-in in protest at management plans to privatise services.

The plans threaten to shift 235 workers to private firms.

They would hit workers in areas such as catering, post and estate services.

Lewis Nielsen is one of the occupiers and a member of the Socialist Worker Student Society.

He told Socialist Worker, “We picketed one of the cafes that is threatened with privatisation last week.

“We handed out free tea and coffee to people and encouraged them not to buy anything from the cafe.

“It was empty all day. That hit management financially but it also got lots of attention.

“And we had the support of all the workers in the cafe.”

Students were forced to cancel a planned protest on Tuesday of this week due to heavy snow.

They plan to hold a national demonstration soon.

Occupiers are trying to link up with other campaigns. “I went to a meeting to defend the NHS last week,” said Lewis.

“We are fighting the same battle and in some cases the same firms. We need solidarity.”
