Victory at London Met as workers are reinstated

Issue No. 2345

Three suspended workers at London Metropolitan University were reinstated last week.

Management had suspended leading trade unionists Jawad Botmeh, Max Watson and Steve Jefferys.

Bosses said they were investigating a “serious matter of concern”.

This was the fact that Jawad has a criminal record—of which the university was

already aware.

Jawad was found guilty of conspiracy to cause explosions in 1996 and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Former Socialist Worker journalist Paul Foot and many others campaigned for his release, arguing that he was wrongly convicted.

The suspension of the three workers sparked protests and solidarity from across the trade union movement.
