Brick kiln stokes resistance

Issue No. 2348

Thirteen workers at Hanson brick factory in Peterborough began an indefinite strike on Monday of this week.

They are the people who fire the kilns that make brick production possible, and are members of the Unite and GMB unions.

“They’re the key part of the operation,” GMB rep John Knight told Socialist Worker. “We’ve been told that production will continue with managers doing those members’ work, but I think they’ll struggle.”

Workers are furious that bosses have robbed them of four days holiday a year.

“They want those four days back,” said John. “They have said they’re prepared to go out for six weeks to get it.”

Workers will be picketing in mornings and evenings for as long as the dispute is on.
