Range jobs on the line

Issue No. 2348

Some 300 workers at a distribution centre in Gloucestershire face redundancy after bosses announced plans to move the centre “to improve efficiency”.

The workers are employed by The Range, which sells home and garden furniture, in Mitchledean.

They began a 90 day consultation on the cuts this month. Their distribution centre is set to close in September.

Mike Grindle has worked at the site for seven years. He told Socialist Worker, “We need work here. People have got mortgages to pay.

“The company is sacking workers while it’s expanding but we made the firm its money.

“The government says it wants to help people who want to work. But we have lost our right to work.”

Mike said that the firm doesn’t recognise unions. But workers held a meeting on Monday of this week to discuss the planned closure.

“All the big industries have gone from this area,” he said. “People facing redundancy have little prospect of finding other work.

“We want the government to listen to us and hear what we’ve got to say.”
