A protest in the pipeline

Issue No. 2348

US secretary of state John Kerry was set to visit London on Thursday of this week—and environmentalist protesters were set to meet him.

He had to face 1,000 protesters in San Francisco last week. Kerry is set to make the final decision on the controversial plan to build a pipeline, Keystone XL, to take oil from Canada’s tar sands across the US to the Gulf of Mexico.

Around 5,000 barrels of Canadian oil leaked from an ExxonMobil pipeline in Arkansas last week, damaging homes and wildlife. The nature of tar sands oil makes it more likely to rupture pipelines.

Protest Thursday 11 April, 8am, Lancaster House, London
