Where next for Unite?

Issue No. 2349

The result of the Unite general secretary election shows a real call from Unite members to discuss the direction of the union. The election campaign was the beginning of that.

“It shows there’s tens of thousands of Unite members who want to turn words into action,” said Ian Allinson, a Manchester IT worker who sits on the union’s Executive Council.

“It will be great if all the people who backed Jerry can now work together to build solidarity and push for an effective fightback.”

Jerry has stressed that the campaign doesn’t stop now.

“The scale of that vote should scream and shout that there’s a lot more we can do against the cuts,” said Jerry. “That’s a really strong base for opposition in the union.”

“Unite is run from the top down. The members don’t have control. But now tens of thousands of them are saying they want to take it.”
