Nationalisation of train line pays

Issue No. 2349

The auction of the the East Coast train line is being rushed through by Tory transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin.

The line has been publicly owned for the last three and a half years.

Virgin’s convicted fraudster Richard Branson claims the line has “stagnated”, because “If you work for the government you don’t get people hungrily trying to make a real difference.”

Yet the line has paid over £600 million to the government since it was effectively nationalised—more than any private owner achieved.
