The Promised Land

Issue No. 2350

Matt Damon stars as Steve, an energy company salesman who has to buy permission to drill for gas from struggling farmers.

The gas will be got out by fracking—blasting shale deposits underground with water and sand. Its side effects include earthquakes and water contamination.

The poor farmers will grab any opportunity to rebuild their community but at least one farmer’s land turns brown and dies.

The film also stars the great Frances McDormand, who starred in Fargo.
