Italian president faces protests

Issue No. 2350

The Italian parliament has re-elected Giorgio Napolitano as its president in the sixth round of voting. The country has been gripped by a political crisis since a general election in February failed to deliver a majority.

While politicians inside parliament cheered the 87 year old Napolitano’s win, outside thousands of people gathered to protest at the grip of the old ruling elite on the country.

Figures released on the same day as the election showed 955,000 Italian households have no income as unemployment rockets.
