As ballot begins, hundreds protest at Ford Dagenham

Issue No. 2350

Hundreds of workers protested at Ford’s plant in Dagenham, Essex, on Thursday of last week as they began a strike ballot.

Ford announced the closure of Dagenham and another plant in Southampton last October with a total loss of around 1,500 jobs.

But workers at Dagenham are being offered much lower severance payments than those in Southampton. And more than 100 workers who had been promised redeployment to new jobs say they have been betrayed. The ballot covers 652 workers in the Unite union.

They should vote yes. Dagenham supplies parts to all Ford’s operations in Europe, so a strike could cause severe disruption.
