Court victory for Dale Farm activist

Issue No. 2350

A protester has won compensation from Essex Police after being arrested and held for hours with no access to water or a toilet.

Police arrested Lu Smith for obstructing a bailiff during the eviction of Travellers at Dale Farm in Basildon, Essex.

She brought a civil claim against Essex Police for assault, false imprisonment and breach of the Human Rights Act 1998.

The court found in her favour this month. The police have issued a formal apology.
