Uclan privatisation halted

Issue No. 2350

Bosses at the University of Central Lancashire (Uclan) in Preston have abandoned plans to privatise the institution after fierce protests from staff and students.

If the plan had gone ahead, Uclan would have been the first whole-privatised higher education facility in Britain. Unison union regional secretary Kevan Nelson called it a “massive victory”.

He said staff and students “knew the dangers lurking in the privatisation plans; that profits would come first, above the needs of students learning at Uclan or the staff working there.”
