Communication workers call for a fightback

Issue No. 2350

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) held its conference in Bournemouth this week.

Delegates were debating a response to pay cuts and privatisation in the Royal Mail sectoral conference as Socialist Worker went to press.

The union executive was defeated several times in the general conference. Delegates passed a motion calling for more pressure on the TUC to call a general strike and opposed changes in the union’s rules.

One worker spoke about how his branch had voted to block evictions due to the bedroom tax.

Some 20 people attended a lively discussion of privatisation and Thatcher’s legacy at an SWP fringe meeting. Around 60 people attended fringe meetings for Unite Against Fascism and on “justice denied”.
