School places crisis - bad stats and bad estimates

Issue No. 2351

The “leap” in the number of children estimated to need school places has been exaggerated because previous estimates were wrong.

The Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment projected in 2011 that London’s population would reach 9.06 million in 2031. A year later it revised this up to 9.66 million.

Results from the 2011 census showed a higher population and bigger household sizes than had previously been assumed.
