The police van arrives to rescue Ukip leader Nigel Farage

Ukip leader Nigel Farage got a rowdy reception outside a pub in Edinburgh yesterday afternoon, Thursday. He had invited the press to the Canons’ Gait on the Royal Mile to  hear him speak about the far right party’s prospects in Scotland.

He didn’t get the publicity he expected however as more than 100 protesters gathered outside chanting “racist scum” and “homophobe” after a text went out saying he would be there. The demonstration was a mixed group of students, trade unionists, Unite Against Fascism activists, and independence campaigners.

In full view of the journalists he had invited, Farage was followed up the street by the angry crowd and had to retreat back towards the pub. He got into a taxi but it was surrounded and the taxi driver refused to move. He was forced to get out and return to the pub until he could be rescued in a police van!
