The myth of the predatory black male and white woman slave

Issue No. 2354

Moral panics about non-white men targeting white women have a long history. The late 19th century saw scares about a “white slave trade” in Western women.

These racist myths usually involved stories of British women being kidnapped to be bought and sold in foreign lands by Jewish men.

In the US abductors were usually assumed to be Chinese.

After the abolition of slavery the image of a “predatory” black male sexuality remained a common racist stereotype.

Consensual interracial relationships were illegal in some US states till as recently as 1967.
