Angry tenants defy the bedroom tax in Sheffield and Manchester

Issue No. 2354

Around 200 people protested against the bedroom tax in Sheffield on Saturday of last week.

Tenants and supporters also protested outside a number of housing association offices, including Eastlands Homes in Manchester.

Eastlands provoked outrage in March when it sent out leaflets advising tenants to give up Sky TV and bingo to pay the bedroom tax.

Benefit cuts have left some people on as little as £30 or £40 a week. Protesters briefly occupied Eastlands’ lobby.

The family of Stephanie Bottrill is supporting a protest against the bedroom tax in Birmingham on Saturday 15 June.

Stephanie died when she threw herself under a lorry after losing £20 a week to the bedroom tax. She left a note blaming the government.

There are also protests planned around Britain on Saturday 1 June.
