Over 100 people joined a march and rally called by the FBU firefighters’ union to defend Belsize Fire station in north London last Saturday.
Firefighters in uniform led the march. Local residents and other trade unionists joined them.
The lively march took the road and people chanted, “Boris Johnson stop your lies, station closures will cost lives”.
FBU general secretary Matt Wrack addressed the rally from the top of a fire engine.
Protests planned to defend stations
Around 100 people last week heard London Fire Authority officers try to justify the closure of 12 London fire stations.
Local firefighters were in the audience at Stoke Newington, north east London.
They were told that the stations are no longer needed because of a decline in the number of fires.
The stations include Kingsland Fire Station in Hackney.
Speakers from the platform and the floor made clear their determination to fight the closures.
Many committed to join demonstrations from Kingsland Fire Station and Highbury Fields on 8 June. These are set to join together and march to the threatened Clerkenwell Fire Station in Islington.
