France—homophobes on the march

Issue No. 2355

Hundreds of thousands of right wing protesters demonstrated against equal marriage again in Paris last weekend—a month after it was voted into French law.

Demonstrators ranged from the leader of the conservative UMP opposition to priests and the fascist Front National.

Far right youth groups clashed with journalists and police and occupied the roof of the ruling Labour-type Socialist Party headquarters.

A poll carried out in April shows a majority of French people support equal marriage.

But worryingly the homophobic right is setting the agenda.
