Marian Price freed

Issue No. 2356

Marian Price has finally been released after spending two years in Maghaberry prison in Northern Ireland.

Marian and her sister Dolours had spent time in prison for the Old Bailey bombing in 1973. They went on hunger strike demanding repatriation to Ireland as political prisoners.

She was re-arrested after attending an Easter Rising commemoration in 2011, and was then held without trial after Northern Ireland Secretary Owen Paterson said her threat had “significantly increased”.

Despite requests by Marian’s family for her to be released as her health deteriorated, she was held as the only female prisoner in Maghaberry until she was moved to the hospital wing.

Her family say she is seriously ill, suffering from severe depression.
