TEN WOMEN workers at Cadbury World are threatening to strike in a dispute which could see pickets on the gates of the Birmingham tourist attraction. The workers run one of the shops at Cadbury World and were horrified to discover that they are paid £2 an hour less than men who work at the shop across the road from them. Cadbury has ignored the problem for two years.
Officials from the TGWU union were meeting the women as Socialist Worker went to press. They are considering a series of 24-hour strikes. According to John Jordan, a TGWU organiser, management have threatened the staff, who earn just £5.60 an hour. He said that the shop steward was searched on three occasions during the ballot.
Mr Jordan said, "I see that as an attack on the union. They have tried to isolate members and get them in on a one-to-one basis saying that if they pursue strike action everyone could lose their jobs."
